Metta, Karuna, Mudita, Upekkha

Last week, we started learning about the “Four Divine Abodes” for the mind. The first one is unconditional love (metta in Pali), which doesn’t expect anything in return. This week, we look at the other three: compassion (karuna in Pali), joy (mudita in Pali), and equanimity (upekkha in Pali) - as Thich Nhat Hanh teaches them so beautifully in his book “The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching” on pages 172ff until the end of chapter 22 titled The Four Immeasurable Minds.
